- What is Codex Alimentarius? Codex Alimentarius is an organization which regulation setting is industry dominated. Its standards are officially recognized by United Nations Organizations such as the FAO (Food and Agricultural Organization) and WHO (World Health Organization), and they have been adopted by the WTO (World Trade Organization). This means that there is pressure on governments to adopt these industry driven regulations. Dangerous goods and foods cannot be stopped at the border of any sovereign states, because that state could then be found in violation of the world trade agreements. In practice, this means that sovereign states can no longer ban the import into the country of food treated with dangerous chemicals, nor genetically modified animal foods, into their country.
